Worship School Story: Darrek

You belong here. Whether you’re involved in worship ministry or not. Whether you’re a spectator, participant, volunteer, full-time, part-time, or not even sure exactly. You belong here.

Darrek grew up going to church. In college, he got involved with music, playing guitar with his roommate. After a few years of exploring his faith, Darrek recommitted his life to Christ and got involved in a church, volunteering in the band.

“I realized this was somewhere I belonged and put a lot of work into worship. I really felt like worship was my avenue into connecting with God.”

With a desire to continue learning and growing in this passion for music and leadership, Darrek applied for Shift115’s Worship School, a 9-Month Worship Leadership Certification process in partnership with Sioux Falls Seminary. Today, Darrek works full-time as a programmer at and serves as the volunteer worship leader at Red Door Church.

Our 9-Month Worship School process includes a weekly group gathering – a curriculum-driven classroom time for teaching and group discussion – as well as an opportunity to explore topics more deeply and personally through monthly one-on-one mentoring. We value a holistic approach to leadership formation, being intentional to “examine and strengthen our HEART through prayer, worship, and spiritual formation, sharpen our HEAD in biblical and technical teaching, and equip our HANDS with practical training and application.”

Cultivating rhythms and creating space for spiritual formation and leadership development is foundational to this process. Participants take time to reflect and discuss their own spiritual journey and set some goals for the coming months.

“I’ve never thought of spiritual rhythms before now. It makes sense that our spiritual life ebbs  and flows just as the rest of our daily life… After reflecting on all these different areas of spiritual rhythms and disciplines, it gives me a good perspective into what I can work on… It seems we are never done growing in our faith, imagine that.”

Throughout the 9-month process, we have several one-night sessions open to anyone in the community. In October we offered a basic sound systems training, in November we had a vocal technique session, in December we will have a session on cultivating a theology of worship, and we will have even more sessions after the new year.

Wherever you find yourself today, there is an opportunity for you to belong here. Whether as a participant or partner in ministry, we want to invite you to be part of what God is up to through this Kingdom work in Sioux Falls and beyond!

If you are looking for a place to be encouraged and equipped in worship ministry, consider participating in our Worship School.

Whether you’re involved in worship ministry or not, we would love for you to consider partnering with Shift115 in prayer and with financial support so that we can make it possible for Darrek and others like him to learn and grow in worship, leadership, and in life.
