Songs for Advent & Christmas

Originally posted during Advent 2014, we have been updating this every year to be an ongoing resource. If you have any suggestions or favorites to add, please comment or let us know!

We’ve turned the corner into a new year in the Christian liturgical calendar as the season of Advent has begun. The first Sunday of Advent this year (2014) was November 30. I grew up not really ever hearing about Advent. December hit and we busted out all the Christmas carols. At least, that’s what I remember. The beautiful thing about celebrating Advent is that Christmas is put in perspective and can be celebrated more fully.

In preparing for worship during the Advent season, a season of remembering and expectation of Christ, several words came up in my devotion and prayer time: disruption, in-breaking, disorientation, and collision. We remember with expectation the good news of Jesus Christ, God incarnate, who came and is coming again. Advent, if we allow it, will disrupt our ordinary lives, break in, disorient us, and heaven will collide with our earthly realities.

We asked people in our Facebook group, Sioux Falls Area Worship Collective, what some of their favorite songs are for the seasons of Advent & Christmas. Below is a list of songs that will hopefully be expanded and edited with chord chart attachments for the ones with particular arrangements. Many of them could otherwise be found through CCLI’s SongSelect or other online music libraries. I would add that this list is put together with an emphasis on songs for corporate worship while some may not be ideal for corporate singing.
