Paul writes in Ephesians 4:1-16 about unity in the body of Christ. Paul urges the church in Ephesus to “walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (1b-3, ESV). A bit further, Paul discourages negative behavior and then encourages them, “Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love” (15-16).
These verses, as well as many others, are great examples that teach us how we might live our lives with brothers and sisters in Christ. There are many characteristics and behaviors that are pointed to; humility, gentleness, patience, love, and peace. As I reflect on the Fearless 50k and Day of Prayer to raise awareness and support for local non-profits, this passage comes to mind for the following reasons: unity and encouragement.
These verses are all about unity, so it’s no surprise that the theme of unity runs through the text. It’s about unity in the Holy Spirit and also points to unity in community as believers, the body of Christ.
The last verse listed above points to the body maturing and building itself up in love. As we unite and grow together, we thrive in community as we encourage one another and build each other up.
These are two great things that I see happening through the efforts of Fearless Foundation and that I specifically experienced at the run that was held on the National Day of Prayer in May. People were invited to participate in this event by choosing any distance to run/hike/walk and support a local non-profit by praying on the trails and raising money for them ahead of time.
My family and I invited people ahead of this event to participate and support us in the work we are doing through Shift115 Worship Collective, and we also took our boys out to the trails to participate and support others. It was such a great experience as a family and ministry to work together and encourage others on the trails. It’s such a great feeling to see others on the trail who are there for the same reason; some we got to see and give a high five, others we didn’t see but just knew they were out there.
This event, and the work of Fearless Foundation, brings local non-profits together in unity to encourage and build each other up. It’s no secret that more can be accomplished when we partner together, so I am thankful for the work of Fearless Foundation and this specific event. I look forward to seeing how God continues to unite His People through this and create opportunities to build one another up to accomplish greater Kingdom work!
