Worship As A Lifestyle

“From the rising of the sun to its setting, the Name of the Lord is to be praised.” – Psalm 113:3

To me, this scripture describes what worship should be in one, simple sentence. Worship isn’t just an act of praise through song or music alone; worship is a lifestyle. I think a lot of people just categorize the term “worship” as the thing you do when you are singing songs and lifting your hands during the music portion of a church service. Yet, worship is so much more than that, far more than being limited to one of thousands of ways we can bring honor to our incredible and magnificent Creator! Continue reading

Oh, How He Loves Us!

Sometimes in worship, both privately and corporately, we need to sit in the truth of how much God loves us. He pursues us. He wants us to rest in him. This song by John Mark McMillan has impacted my relationship with God as I worship him and basque in the love he has for me, for us. Take a few minutes and let his love soak in your soul!

Holy Spirit, draw near and fill me with your Love. Move in my heart and mind, conform me to the image of Christ, and let me be filled with Love today. Amen.

What About Bob?

Remember the movie “What About Bob?” I have to say, it’s one of my all time favorites. The opening scene, with Bill Murray playing Bob who’s an obsessive compulsive so afraid to leave his apartment that he has to talk his way out, says to himself, over and over : “I feel good. I feel great. I feel wonderful. I feel good. I feel great. I feel wonderful.” Continue reading

More Than A Feeling

Disclaimer: This post is not about a girl I used to know that slipped away when I closed my eyes… but as I was reflecting on worship this morning, I was thinking about how often we base it, both corporate and private, on our feelings or how people respond by what they felt while worshiping. Don’t get me wrong here, I think feelings are very much a part of encountering God and glorifying God in worship. On the other hand, it is easy to let the pendulum swing too far to the feeling side where we lose our intentionality and discipline. Continue reading

Adoption & Provision

I had the ideal job. I was making enough money to provide for my family, even while my wife was finishing graduate school. Daytime office hours, a full benefits package, no traveling; it was ideal. I was able to provide for my family. My wife and I felt called by God to pursue an adoption in Liberia, West Africa. We began the process and stepped out in faith. We started putting together the paperwork and organizing all of the many details that we needed to complete. Within days of our decision to pursue the adoption, I learned that I was being laid off along with several other individuals during the economic crisis a few years ago. Continue reading

The Message & The Medium

I love what the Apostle Paul writes to the Corinthians about becoming a servant of all in 1 Corinthians 9:19-23. He doesn’t count himself as greater than anyone, and he is focused!

I’ve heard several times that the message is more important than the medium. If we ever stop short of doing what we do “for the sake of the gospel” (1 Cor 9:23) or for the cause of Christ, then we’re creating idols and false religion! Continue reading

Resource: VantagePoint3

Part of the vision of this site is to equip followers of Christ in worship and life. To be faithful to that, there is a Resource section on this site. In addition to that, I will occasionally highlight, and feature, one of the resources in that section. Today I want to bring to your attention an organization called VantagePoint3. I was introduced to VP3 when I was on a freelance video job and ended up working as a grip and audio mixer on a video for them. Continue reading

More Than A Set List

One of the latest trends of worship leaders and other church staff is posting their song set list from the weekly service(s). I have participated in this in the last couple years, and if you go back far enough, you’ll probably find a couple on this site. I would love to hear from worship leaders that I am in community with about what they are doing beyond the set list. Don’t get me wrong, I like to see and hear about what songs are being played, and even share my own, yet I would like to hear more about how leaders are curating worship, creating meaningful and authentic times for the community to worship together. This certainly includes songs, and it includes prayer, readings, and other elements that may happen during a set of music or between sets. Continue reading

Christmas & Flesh

It’s the day after Christmas Day, and I just can’t stop trying to wrap my mind around what this means for us. Especially in our American culture, we’ve commercialized Christmas and the “holiday season” so much that, by the time December 25 rolls around, we’ve exhausted all our hype and tradition that I think many of us overlook what we’re really celebrating. Continue reading
